New Job

If you need more income then a new job can often be the way to achieve it. But there are risks involved with this approach.

First of all you could have a problem if your present employer finds out that you are looking elsewhere!
- Don't look for work whilst you are in your workplace.
- Certainly don't use the company telephone or email to find jobs.
- And don't tell people at work that you want to leave. They are bound to tell others!
- Try to get interviews during the lunch break or evenings or weekends. Taking a few half-days off work will quickly be seen as you attending interviews!

Another risk with getting a new job is that you may lose a certain amount of seniority from being in your current job for a long time.

It is possible that the management see you as a candidate for promotion. On the other hand you may have been in the job so long that it is obvious that you have been bypassed for promotion! You should make an effort to know if either situation applies!

A new job generally means more more money and often a more responsible or senior position. There is a risk that you may not succeed at this new level. Almost everyone has a limit where they are not able to work well at. One truism is that most people get promoted to the level at which they are not able to progress further!

Education is the key to overcome problems with a new job and new responsibilities. It is not easy to take on a study course when you have a full time job, but it does help you to find a new job or improve your prospects with your current employers. Apart from anything else it shows potential employers that you are capable and intelligent!

Prepare a professional CV
You do need a good CV for your potential employers. Don't just dust off an old CV from a few years earlier. It was good enough to get you your current job but it needs updating and expectations for CVs may have changed. GCSE results and a 25 yard breast stroke certificate may not be appropriate 10 or more years later!
