Debt Problems
Why do people get into debt?
Often it is because they buy something on credit which they cannot, for one reason or another, pay back to the credit companies.
Not that many years ago people would never buy anything until they had saved the money to buy it outright. The idea of going into debt was not acceptable. Most people have a different viewpoint now but it may be better to stick to the older viewpoint.
Although some items have to be purchased by credit, for example houses, cars etc, people are generally now quite happy to buy most items on credit these days. Even using credit cards is a form of credit if the credit card balance is not paid off each month.
There are times in all of our lives when money, or the lack of it, becomes a problem. This often results in a lot of stress and worry for the people involved. Credit can be useful in these situations but only if you know that you will have the money to pay it back later.
If you start defaulting on repaying the credit when it is due then life can become quite difficult and much more expensive!
One thing that I find sad is that people who may find themselves unable to pay their bills are frequently penalised by financial penalties! This simply escalates the problem beyond the ability of people to sort themselves out! Financial penalties should not be allowed until people have got their finances back into order.
Many families get into debt for reasons outside of their control. The breadwinner could be made redundant or be ill and unable to work. But it could simply be caused by rising costs or unexpected bills that mean that there simply isn't enough money to pay the bills each month. Then the banks fail to pay direct debits and take an outrageous charge from the account for the privilage of bouncing the direct debits.
The charge for a bounced direct debit is the same for a person earning 24K per year and someone on £80 per week. But the effect of that charge on the latter person is much more dramatic and can cause all sorts of problems for them.
How do people manage their finances
Of course some people are irresponsible and just just spend without even considering how they are go to pay their debts. But even these people eventually come to a point where they need to sort themselves out. If you have a lot of debt and creditors are threatening you with legal action, repossession or bailiffs then you must get professional help.
